We recognized Shepard Broad College of Law for offering one of Top Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Paralegal Studies, adding them to our list of top recommendations for students in the area.
We were excited to hear from Jessica Garcia-Brown, faculty member at Shepard Broad College of Law, who took the time to answer a few questions about how the school works to create a great student experience that helps prepare graduates for a career in the legal field.
Are you finding a lot of career changers in your program looking to get their start in the legal profession?
Jessica: Our program does have several students who wish to change careers or are interested in joining the legal profession. This major is also good for those incoming freshman who know they want to become lawyers, but want to study a career that will help them be financially independent prior to beginning law school.
Paralegals are really getting the respect they deserve these days, and taking on more and more responsibilities on the job. How is this changing the approach to educating new paralegals?
Jessica: Students continue to receive an education where they are aware of the responsibility of working with an attorney on important legal matters affecting individuals and society. Students are taught how to manage law firms while ensuring attorneys are prepared for their cases.
Does the program at your school include an internship and are faculty available to help students find one?
Jessica: The curriculum does include an elective internship. Both faculty and university administration are available with internship placement.
What are some of the things you love most about the paralegal program at your school – the kind of things you’d like future students to know about as they consider their options?
Jessica: The program is housed in the Shepard Broad College of Law. As one of the few undergraduate programs housed in a law school, paralegal students receive all the academic and research benefits that law students receive.
