Participating in an Externship or Internship While Still in School
The term “externship” is typically reserved for student programs that offer some exposure to the internal workings of law firms and corporate legal departments, either as part of a formal paralegal associate’s or bachelor’s degree program or as something students can pursue independently.
Externships are rarely paid, and would only result in college credit when offered as part of sa formal degree program. Still, paid student internship positions that earn college credit are sometimes arranged through schools that have an established relationship with area firms.
The term “externship” is falling out of common use, and the term “internship” is now most often used to describe both non-paid student experiences and paid positions for recent graduates.
Most ABA-approved paralegal degree programs and many programs offered through schools that hold regional accreditation require an internship or externship as part of the graduation requirements.
The obvious benefit is that when your internship or externship is part of your degree program, it won’t be as competitive as a conventional internship. In most cases, you would work within a firm that already has an agreement in place with your school to accept students.
Students would make a commitment of about 180 hours, which would be spent performing common tasks at a local law firm or the legal department of a local business. This kind of structured student experience may be part of two and four-year degree programs, but is rarely included in certificate programs. Still, students of certificate programs would benefit from this kind of experience and are free to pursue opportunities on their own.
For paralegal students, internships and externships offer the opportunity to get exposure to and build skills at firms that would otherwise not offer a regular position to candidates without more experience. They offer a chance to get a taste of the reality of the job without making a total commitment.
Making professional contacts in the legal field is one of the most important benefits that come with participating in a student experience of this sort. A student starting out as an intern or extern with a host firm could very well end up a full time employee after completing their education.
Participating in an Internship After You Earn Your Degree
An internship for recent graduates is a job much like any other, but only lasts for a finite period of time, typically three months. This means you’ll be competing for the position and applying along with other green candidates. You would be expected to meet basic job qualifications and participate in an interview process, just as you would for any other job.
An internship is a temporary position that allows you to take on many of the daily tasks of a full-fledged paralegal at a reduced pay rate. For you, it’s a way to gain valuable, practical, real-world experience in a law firm or corporation; for the employer, it’s an extra pair of hands to help with the endless detail-oriented tasks and pillars of paperwork associated with legal work.
There are a number of networks through which you can search for an internship position, including the institution where you obtained your education, your state and local professional associations, and social networks– LinkedIn is a great source for finding professional and student networks that can clue you into the latest internship opportunities.
Simply sending a resume and cover letter to a local law firm that offers legal services in your area of interest is also an acceptable way to reach out in an attempt to get your foot in the door.
Consider exactly what you are looking for in an internship before you begin your search. For example, do you want to work at a large law firm, or do you feel like a smaller law firm would be a better fit for you? Do you want a part-time or a full-time internship? Is there a particular area of law in which you want to gain experience?
Life as a Paralegal Intern
At first, you can expect to be handed all the mundane work involved in any office: alphabetizing files, stamping envelopes, making copies.
This may not seem like the exciting legal work you signed up for, but it is part of paying your dues and, more importantly, will help teach you one valuable lesson that every paralegal has to learn to succeed in the industry: attention to detail in even the most mundane aspects of the job.
But it’s not all mundane office work. You can expect to dive into actual, substantive paralegal work sooner than you might think, although you will be closely supervised.
Interns clearly are in no position to fill the strategic aspects of paralegal work performed by more experienced professionals that have earned the trust of the lawyers they work for, but they are often called upon to take on more and more responsibility over the course of the internship with tasks that include:
- Researching rules, regulations, and case law.
- Performing factual research pertaining to cases or filings.
- Drafting legal documents.
- Filing documents with the court.
Although interns don’t often handle direct responsibilities like meeting with clients or coordinating with other attorneys or courts, they are often allowed to observe these activities. They also observe proceedings in courtrooms.
It’s not a completely passive experience; paralegals and lawyers alike help tutor and instruct interns, both to get them up to speed on the work they will perform, but also as part of their education in the profession.
If the internship is with a larger law firm that handles different types of work in different areas of law, you can expect to rotate through various tasks and gain exposure to the different areas of law the firm specializes in. This is a great way to get exposure to many different types of paralegal work and get a sense for the area of law you might ultimately want to specialize in.
Steps to Landing a Paralegal Internship
Unless you get placed into an internship as part of your program, you’ll be up against some stiff competition when searching out opportunities. There are relatively few available, and since they offer one of the best paths to launching a career you better believe the most ambitious up-and-comers in your area are going to be applying.
This doesn’t mean the best strategy is to go for the saturation technique by applying to every single one. The best strategy is often to actually be strategic. This means being selective in your own right and making each attempt to connect with a local law office really count. Ultimately, this is your chance to make a connection that could help you transition to fulltime employment. For this reason, it’s wise to pursue internships with firms that specialize in areas that align with your professional goals and objectives, whether this means pro-bono work for a small firm working in environmental law or high-stakes work for a huge firm involved in mergers and acquisitions.
As a student, your best resource for landing an internship may be your paralegal degree program. Many programs offer credit for internships and help arrange them for students with a regular roster of local law firms or other agencies who employ paralegals.
Going through your school program may be a mixed blessing, however. Although you start off with a leg up on any competition from outside the program, due to the previous relationship your school has with the employer, you may also be pressured to fit into certain internships that you may not be interested in. Although you may not be formally restricted from finding an internship outside those arranged by the school, you will not receive as much assistance and the school will probably encourage you to stick with their list since they know the experience you will gain will align with their curriculum.
The flipside is that striking out on your own means competing for a slot, and the position you’re most interested in may go to someone else.
Collect Reference Letters and Recommendations
Having respected instructors or other members of the legal community vouch for you is a great way to stand out from the crowd when applying.
If you happen to know any lawyers or paralegals in the local community, ask if they will provide you with a letter of reference that you can submit with your resume.
Ask a favorite instructor for a letter of reference to include with your resume, application, and cover letter. If your instructors are willing to offer recommendations, that can carry even more weight, since they have direct knowledge of your aptitude and skills with legal work. Although this may not be required as part of the application process, it will certainly be a clear indicator that you are motivated to land an internship and that you’ve taken your education seriously.
With that in mind, it is a must to take the time to establish yourself as a committed student during your educational experience so as to make the process of collecting reference letters painless when you graduate.
Put in Hours as a Volunteer
It’s sometimes possible to find volunteer work in the legal field, particularly with non-profits or community service organizations that are providing services on the cheap. Although you will not be able to perform any direct legal assistance work prior to getting your degree, you can often find positions where you will be assisting lawyers and paralegals that work for these agencies.
This work both looks good on your resume and potentially gives you even more sources for gaining references from practicing lawyers and paralegals.
Look for Related Work Experience to Emphasize
Although you might not have any law office experience in your background, a lot of legal work is simply paperwork. If you’ve ever had an office job that involves filing, sorting, writing reports, or performing any of the other miscellaneous tasks that modern business runs on, that’s all experience that you can emphasize to show your qualified to perform the basic level of work that an internship will involve.
Develop Your Resume and Cover Letter
Take the time to craft an informative and interesting resume that details your educational experience, your paralegal program and the degree acquired, and any special skills you obtained outside of the standard paralegal coursework.
Include information on any volunteer work you may have participated in (particularly if it was for community-based legal programs) or if you held any jobs that allowed you to develop skills that translate easily into a paralegal position (administrative assistant or secretarial positions, for example). These volunteer and job experiences will serve as a valuable addition to your resume.
Develop a well-written cover letter that speaks to your passion for legal work. A cover letter is a must and is an excellent way to show your professionalism and competence. Your cover letter should be persuasive and should read like a concise argument for why you would be an excellent addition to the firm. Further, it should clearly show your excitement, motivation and willingness to take on the tasks that will help you gain invaluable legal experience.
Since a cover letter and resume are likely your first contact with the law firm, it is important to give these two documents a great deal of care.
Interviewing for Your Internship
If you land an interview for a paralegal internship, take the enthusiasm and passion that you articulated in your resume and cover letter into the interview room and remember that poise, professional attire and demeanor, and honesty are a must when interviewing for a paralegal internship.
Look your interviewer in the eyes and answer all questions thoughtfully and candidly. Confidence and excitement work to your benefit, but being over-eager doesn’t. Presenting yourself as somebody who is capable and willing to keep learning can be just as valuable as presenting a long list of relevant skills and attributes.
Play up your positive character traits and skills and speak to the quality of your education, what you’ve learned from it, and how you feel it will translate well into your first paralegal professional experience.
